We need to radically transform the food system to stay within climate and nature boundaries. Adopting regenerative agriculture practices has the potential to generate positive effects on both on-farm biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions (FOLU, 2019). A growing movement of regenerators in Latin America is leading the way in transitioning to a new model of agriculture that respects climate and nature. Given the size and relevance of the South American food industry, representing 25% of global food exports, the region could take a leading role in influencing agriculture practices worldwide. We can leverage this regional movement to place regeneration at the center of the COP30 agenda in Brazil and demonstrate that a shift in production is possible.
In this event, FOLU Colombia and Brazil, and partners such as CGIAR, TNC and the Global Alliance for the Future of Food will come together to demonstrate the power of the regenerative agriculture movement in Latin America and connect networks of regenerators to discuss how we can bring the topic of regeneration to COP30. Ambitious governments like Valle Del Cauca have already laid out a roadmap to transformation at regional level, we hope to attract more policymakers to be interested in a similar path.
